Ukraine Claims Major Gains in Offensive, Liberates Strategic Town Near Russian Border

Ukraine has announced substantial territorial gains in its ongoing offensive against Russian forces, reporting control over 1,150 square kilometers of land and 82 settlements, including the strategic town of Sudzha, located just eight kilometers from the Russian border. This offensive marks the most extensive attack on Russian soil by a foreign military since World War II.

"We have taken control of 1,150 square kilometers of territory and 82 settlements," stated Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s top military commander.

The Ukrainian military launched its offensive on August 6, following more than two years of resistance against Russia’s invasion. This operation represents a critical turning point in the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the liberation of Sudzha and commended the military’s achievements, stating, "The liberation of the town of Sudzha from the Russian military is now complete."

In retaliation, Russia claimed to have recaptured a village in the Kursk border region and announced the deployment of additional forces to the Belgorod region to strengthen defenses. The Russian defense ministry reported the "complete destruction of the enemy and the restoration of control over the settlement of Krupets."

The ongoing conflict has caused a significant displacement crisis, with over 120,000 Russians either fleeing or being evacuated from border regions. In Kursk, hundreds of evacuees are seeking food and shelter, many of whom are deeply fearful and uncertain about the situation.

"I was very scared, very scared. Shells were flying from all sides," said Nina Golinyaeva, an evacuee from Sudzha.
