Deadly Mosquito Virus Sparks Health Alert in Massachusetts

Massachusetts towns are on high alert due to the heightened risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus.

State officials have warned residents to take precautions against mosquito bites as the virus poses a serious health threat. Ten communities in the state have been classified as high or critical risk for EEE, leading to aerial and truck-mounted spraying efforts.

"We haven't seen an EEE outbreak in four years," said Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein. "This year's activity increases the risk for our communities. We urge everyone to take preventative measures."

Residents are advised to wear long clothing, avoid peak mosquito hours, and use insect repellant. While most EEE infections are asymptomatic, the virus can cause severe illness, including encephalitis, which can be fatal.

In response to the increased risk, Plymouth town officials have closed all public parks during dusk and dawn.
